How to make design decisions

We have previously covered how to choose a capable contractor for your project, but now Y9 Construction would like to emphasize on how to make design decisions to ensure maximum satisfaction. Since home remodeling projects involve making a great number of decisions, it is imperative that you make them based exclusively on your wants and needs. Unfortunately, many make home improvement choices based on what the majority is doing, trends, appearances, among other factors. Therefore, we would like to help you sharpen those skills so that you can make long-lasting and satisfying decisions.

How to make design decisions

Most of us want to feel the freedom of confidence in the decisions we make. This is true in every aspect of our lives and most apparent when we are faced to make life changing choices, like a career, a partner, your kids names, or a big investment. Similarly, home remodeling is a big investment that will require for you to make big and honest decisions.

Our experience tells us that making home remodeling decisions isn’t always easy or comfortable for every homeowner. As a result, we decided to create a guide so that you can make bolder and better home remodeling decisions. At the end, it is you who needs to be completely happy with the end result.

Without further ado, let’s get to the meat and find out how to make design decisions.

Cabinet Selection

Although we can tell you what the most common cabinet choice is, we prefer not to do it. Often, the most popular choice isn’t necessarily the best choice for everyone. Certainly, it’s common for homeowners to search online for ideas and then choose based on popularity.

We challenge you to look back on that choice and consider a few questions:

  • If you didn’t look for ideas online, would this still be your choice?
  • Do I really need all of those pullouts, and additional luxury accessories, or am I being pulled into a fad?
  • Am I looking at a wide variety of options by challenging my contractor with valuable questions related to my specific needs?
  • Will I be okay with this color even after the trend fades out?
  • Is it my opinion or someone else’s opinion I’m following as I make this decision?

Performance and Comfort

Believe it or not, many forget about their personal level of comfort when they make home remodeling design choices. The reason is simple; we have a tendency to first think with our eyes. Without a doubt, visual appeal is an important factor, but far from being the only thing to consider.

Similar to when we choose a romantic partner, we want to make sure that our home feels like one where we can be ourselves and relax. In our opinion, the last thing we want to do at home is struggle with dysfunctional drawers, handles, closets, etc.

Consider a few questions:

  • How reachable are the items I must get to on a regular basis?
  • Do I have enough room to move around my kitchen?
  • Do I have enough cabinet space to store everything I own?
  • Is the design layout consistent with the furniture I own and plan to use?
  • Is the new design friendly to you and your family’s needs?

Timeless

Making wild choices during our youth probably felt like the best idea at the time. At the same time, many wild choices have a short shelf life. We know you remember that funky haircut and perhaps even a couple of regrettable tattoos that were eventually covered up. Likewise, certain hot trends and home design styles may not be as hot in a few years.

Over the top trends have a tendency of cooling down really quick. This might not be of great concern to you if you don’t mind constantly investing in remodeling. However, this is probably not the case for most of us. Furthermore, since the vast majority is deciding for the long run, we want to avoid as many “would haves” and ”should haves” as possible. This way, you will prevent a long list of “I wish I would haves” and costly regrets.

Think about the following when you’re making style decisions:

  • Will I still like this color a few years down the line?
  • Do I feel confident about the decision I’m making at this moment?
  • Would this be my absolute choice even if it wasn’t trending?
  • Can I see this kitchen, living room, space aging well?
  • Can I see myself enjoying this newly designed space 5, 10, or even 20 years down the line?

Lastly, we can’t emphasize enough on the importance of making decisions on your own, based on what you need and deem as important. Sometimes it is difficult to decide when more than one party is contributing to the decision making argument. In this case, we suggest keeping the decision committee small and objective to your needs. In return, this will ensure that you make the most out of your project for many years to come.
